Deadwood
(Mark Barker)

In the town of Deadwood I've been told
The tinhorns came in search of gold
Gamblers, ramblers, two bit whores
And outlaws with a lust for ore
Adventurous and unafraid
They brought their shovels and their spades
From the north and south and east they came
With picks and pans to stake a claim

Chorus:

In the Dakota Territory
The old folks there still tell the story
Of the mining camps and how they thrived
In the big gold rush of  ‘75

When Bill Hickok rode in that day
He didn’t have a lot to say
Just moseyed up to Sweeney’s Bar
For whiskey and a big cigar
Where he ran into a dear old flame
A muleskinner named Martha Jane
Day and night they drank their fill
Calamity Jane and old Wild Bill

Bill was known for drinking hard
Raising hell and playing cards
A gunslinger of wide acclaim
Everybody knew his name
Soon the news had spread around
Wild Bill Hickok was in town
He was hated and he was feared
Reviled, respected and revered

Bill sat down for some five card draw
When in walks a drifter named Jack McCall
All liquored up and looking for fame
He stood at the bar just watching the game
Bill didn't know that Jack was there
When he checked his cards he had two pair
Aces and eights as he ordered more rye
A dead man's hand, it’s a good day to die

Jack slowly approached until
He was standing right behind Wild Bill
From under his coat he pulled a gun
And soon enough the deed was done
He shot him in the back of the head
And Bill fell on the cold floor dead
Some say Jack did it for the thrill
And for the fame he got when he shot Wild Bill

2nd Chorus:

In the Dakota Territory
The townsfolk there still tell a story
Of Wild Bill Hickok and his demise
And the big gold rush of ‘75
