Matamoras
(Mark Barker)

It was winter, clearly I remember
It was in December, 1991
Little I knew soon we would be dancing
And later on romancing until the night was done

The band played “Feliz Navidad”
And laughter filled the air
And you were in your satin dress
With a red rose in your hair
And I found your beauty positively
Stunning and so rare
And then and there I knew that I must have you

In a café just south of the border
We sat down to order a flask of cabernet
When a stranger boldly walked up to you
It was obvious he knew you much to my dismay

Emotion got the best of me
And I lost my self control
And flew into a jealous rage
And let my anger show
When I shoved him you decided
It was time for you to go
And when I ran outside I could not find you

I saw Pedro down at the arena
He said he had seen a girl that looked a lot like you
With a gringo down in Acapulco
Said the guy was loco, he had had more than a few

There’s a milky mist upon the moon
And the stars refuse to shine
And now I see where I was rude
And I surely was unkind
And your memory’s a heavy load
Weighin' on my mind
And tomorrow I will leave for Matamoras
